The stadium was first a small and simple place which after being converted into a professional cricket venue and now is able to host Test, ODI, T20I and first-class cricket matches. Royal Challengers Bangalore (an IPL team) and Karnataka state cricket teams (men and women) used the stadium as a home ground for their home matches.

The stadium is famous for its wide range of history, and other historical events that occurred at the stadium. It is also famous because of the two legendary cricketers Gordon Greenidge and Sir Viv Richards from the West Indies, who played their first test match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

History:

M. Chinnaswamy Stadium was first established by Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) during the presidency of J. Gopala Krishnan in 1969 means the inception or foundation stone was laid in that year. While the actual work over the project (stadium construction) was started in 1770 which took approximately two years and completed by late 1972 or early 1973.

The stadium was able to host domestic first-class matches during the 1972-73 season. After some upgrades and improvements required for international Test matches by that year the stadium was hosted for the first time when West Indies came to India in 1974 .

Mangalam Chinnaswamy (an Indian cricket administrator and lawyer) played a significant role in the stadium’s establishment and was the President of the BCCI from 1977 to 1980. In 1987, KSCA itself took the decision to rename the stadium from Karnataka State Cricket Association Stadium to M. Chinnaswamy stadium because of his excellence achievements.
