Lucknow Super Giants is a professional IPL franchise established in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India which competes every year in the Indian Premier League tournament to win the championship title since 2022.
Lucknow Super Giants is owned by the RPSG Group, a multinational conglomerate company based in Kolkata, India, the company was founded by an Indian businessman named Sanjiv Goenka in 2011 which is responsible for the franchise’s financial backing, decision-making, team building, and community management.
Lucknow Super Giants will be captained by Rishabh Pant and coached by Justin Langer, a former Australian batsman for the IPL 2025 tournament. Lucknow Super Giants play their home matches at the stadium, Ekana Cricket Stadium.

History
The team’s Lucknow Super Giants real history began after the announcement of the IPL’s Governing Council for the addition of two new franchises in August 2021. Around 22 companies showed interest in owning the Lucknow Super Giants franchise but with the highest bid of ₹7,090 crore (approximately US$920 million), RPSG Group owned by Sanjiv Goenka won the right to own the team.

In 2016 and 2017, when Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were banned for two years from the IPL, RPSG Group operated a temporary IPL franchise Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) for two seasons (2016 and 2017) and Durban’s Super Giants, South African professional franchise purchased in SA20 league in September 2022.
The RPSG Group’s chairman decided to involve the Lucknow people in the selection of the LSG logo and identity. After the fan poll “Naam Banao, Naam Kamao”, fans submitted name suggestions among the Lucknow people, the name “Lucknow Super Giants” was officially selected, and announced by Sanjiv Goenka, chairman of RPSG Group in January 2022.
Team Captaincy and Coaching
The team, Lucknow Super Giants was initially captained by KL Rahul, and coached by Andy Flower, a former Zimbabwean cricketer in 2022 but after Justin Langer became the head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants in 2023 and LSG decided that KL Rahul will no longer the part of their team before the IPL 2025 auction and chose Rishabh Pant to be the new Lucknow captain.

When the IPL Governing Council wished to add two more franchises to the Indian Premier League, more than 20 biggest companies tried be become the franchise’s right owner but because of the high competition in bidding for the team, an Indian billionaire, Sanjiv Goenka bid the biggest amount of ₹7,090 crore to win the Lucknow Super Giants ownership and thus Sanjiv Goenka became the Lucknow Super Giants owner.
Sanjiv Goenka is an Indian billionaire businessman has a total net worth of $4.9 Billion, he is the founder and chairman of RPSG Group, Sanjiv Goenka spent a lot of money on this franchise to bring this to the next level. Since 2022, Sanjiv Goenka has been the right LSG owner which is managed by his conglomerate company named RPSG Group.
