History
As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced in 2007 to start a T20 cricket league in India, the eight teams participated in that inaugural IPL season to represent India’s different cities for which the auction was held on 20 February 2008 in Mumbai. One of the eight teams was Kolkata Knight Riders, representing Kolkata, a city in India.
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, in partnership with actress Juhi Chawla and her spouse Jay Mehta, eventually bought the team for $75.09 million in 2008. They chose Sourav Ganguly as the team’s captain because of his experience, leadership qualities, aggressive leadership style, and tactical acumen. The team’s name was chosen to be inspired by an American Television series named Knight Rider.
