Wankhede Stadium

Wankhede Stadium is an international cricket stadium established in 1974 in Mumbai, India. It is the home ground of the Mumbai Indians, India National Cricket Team, and Mumbai Cricket Team and is used for international and national cricket matches.

The Stadium is owned and managed by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), which is responsible for its development and management. The stadium has also been used as a venue for three World Cups and many historical cricket events among different countries.

The stadium played a vital role in the previous IPL seasons as it became its regular venue. The stadium is designed fully using advanced technology to modernize facilities for players and spectators, adding Floodlights to enable the stadium for both day and night matches.

Wankhede Stadium History

Before the 1970s, there was city’s primary cricket stadium in Mumbai named Brabourne Stadium was used for playing cricket and was managed by the Cricket Club of India (CCI), over time due to the limitations on the use of Brabourne Stadium and because of the Bombay Cricket Association (BCA) and the Cricket Club of India (CCI) disputes at the time.

BCA (led by the current president Barrister Sheshrao Krishnarao Wankhede at the time) realized the issue of not having a good venue for international matches and decided to construct a new cricket stadium to solve that issue.

The construction project of the new cricket stadium in Mumbai was handled by the architect Shashi Prabhu and Associates which was completed within one year 1974. The Mumbai cricket stadium was ready to host the series’ final Test match between India and West Indies in 1975.

Development of the Stadium

After the full construction of the stadium in 1974 and International matches at the stadium, MCA brought many changes continuously to make the Wankhede Stadium Mumbai liveable according to the rules and requirements set by ICC such as modernizing players and spectators’ facilities,  adding Flood Lights, overall infrastructure, etc.

But the real reconstruction of the stadium was preparing it for the 2011 World Cup, the work on the project (reconstruction of Wankhede Stadium for the 2011 World Cup) got started in 2009 due which the stadium was not allowed to host matches until February 2011 because to make it sure that the stadium was ready for 2011 world cup last match (between India and Sri Lanka) and they focused on the redevelopment’s project of the stadium to complete it on time. They improved infrastructure and upgraded the stadium’s aesthetics for a visually appealing look.

Wankhede Stadium Pitch Report

Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, is generally considered batting-friendly particularly in less overs/short games, because it is typically flat, made of clay, has a hard surface, and offers a good bounce, which helps the batsman to hit the ball with power.

Batsmen love to play on Wankhede cricket ground because of its short boundaries, the ball comes smoothly and bouncy at the pitch which helps the batsmen to shots the ball well, and often batsmen score more runs at the pitch which makes Mumbai cricket stadium a high-scoring cricket ground in India.

However, it does not mean that the Wankhede stadium pitch is only advantageous for batsmen, sometimes the pitch becomes bowling-friendly for a bit during the match and bowlers have the chance to get out the batsmen, especially for spinners and with new balls.

Bowlers also get benefits from the pitch primarily with a new ball at the start of the match, the stadium’s surface is hard and smooth which helps the bowlers and spinners to hit the ball wherever they want.

The pitch report also depends upon the city’s weather conditions and might be changed due to sudden changes in Mumbai’s weather which might help spinners a little, especially in the evening.
